1. The President Comes to Town Marker
Before 1917, local Catholics celebrated mass in various halls, including the Opera House, and even in private homes. The foundation for this church was laid in 1916 and, year later, the first services were held inside. Although only twelve Catholic families lived in the town at the time, the congregation multiplied seasonally as visitors to Boothbay Harbor could boost attendance to over 600. The steeple was finished in 1924 and the church was dedicated in 1926. The outside of the building was originally finished in weathered cedar shingles until the decision was made to render the exterior white in the 1950s. Although visited by thousands of holiday-makers over the years, perhaps the most famous person to attend services here was President John F. Kennedy in August 1962.
