Inscription.
In 1765, Thomas Lingle laid out his town, which was subdivided into 80 plots. He named it "The Town of St. Thomas". You are looking at Plot 40; this is the edge of the original plot plan of the town. Following Thomas Lingle's death in 1811, the citizens started to call it "Lingle's Town."

Saddle Shop

Across from Blue Mountain Parkway sits a building at the corner of Linglestown Road and Blue Mountain Parkway, 5922 Linglestown Road. This property, Plot 49, was bought by Jonas Schoenar in 1841 along with Plot 41. Jonas was a saddler and harness maker by trade, and he operated his saddle and harness making business from 1884 until 1892 out of the original building constructed on this property. The business was called "Jonas Schoenar & Son". Jonas and his son, John H. Schoenar (1854-1946), also a harness maker, were known for making beautiful saddles and harnesses at the small shop. In 1948, the saddle shop (photo below) was torn down, and the structure that still stands today is the building that stood in the southwest corner of the lot (photo at left). One can still see the original logs in the interior walls of this existing building.

Linglestown Road
Linglestown Road was originally named "Market Street" by Thomas Lingle; it was later renamed "Main Street". Linglestown Road is State Route 39. This was a dirt road until it was paved in 1919, when State Route 39 became the first slip-formed concrete road in Pennsylvania.

In 2011, construction was started on two roundabouts on Linglestown Road, which were built to ease and redirect the traffic flow. At that time, approximately 16,000 vehicles passed through Linglestown each day.

Church of God Parsonage
Across the road at 5921 Linglestown Road at Plot 39 you can see a dedicated plaque high up on the side wall of the house. Inscribed are the words "Built Circa 1830 First Parsonage Church of God in America". The Church of God Cemetery is located a short distance behind here. At one time, the church also stood near this location.
