Regarding Soldiers & Sailors Memorial Hall. Soldiers & Sailors Memorial Hall is the largest memorial in the United States that is dedicated solely to honoring all branches of military veterans and service personnel. This historic building was conceived by the Grand Army of the Republic during the 1890s as a way for Pittsburgh and Allegheny County residents to honor the dwindling ranks of American Civil War veterans. The memorial now represents all branches of the service and honors career and citizen soldiers who have served the U.S. throughout its history. The museum contains rare and one-of-a-kind exhibits that span the eras from the Civil War to present-day conflicts. It was designated a Pittsburgh Historic Landmark in 1970 and added to the National Register of Historic Places on December 30, 1974.
