Inscription.
In 1903 a merger of important steel development began, the Whitaker Iron Company becoming the first of a group to have 18 sheet and tin plate mills.

The Wheeling Traction Company competed with the new City Railway Company for trolley car riders.

The city's population was now 38,878. Lumbering was a new and very successful business and with it came cabinet and furniture making. William Nesbitt built his furniture store on this spot in 1903, catering to a public that had money and opportunity to build and furnish fine Victorian homes within the city. Capitalizing on the heavy business district surrounding the two Market Houses Mr. Nesbitt never wanted for patrons to his furniture store.
