In the mid-20th century, York, PA, became known as "Muscletown USA" through the promotional genius of Bob Hoffman. Hoffman, founder of York Barbell Corp. in 1932, was a fitness enthusiast, U.S. Olympic coach, and extraordinary businessman and philanthropist. Hailed as the father of weightlifting, Hoffman popularized the bodybuilding movement and has been credited with inspiring the worldwide focus on sports and fitness.
Bob Hoffman's philanthropy included sizeable land tracts to create Richard M. Nixon Park and Dover YMCA.
