Thoner House
2238 Market St.
| | 1877 | |
Mr. Thoner's concern would be that of fine wines and liquors. His clientele were men of notable influence in the community. Although men were welcome to "taste" and purchase the product via the front entrance, ladies were required to use a side door and enter a separate room.
Wheeling was a center [of] commerce and trade by this time. Socializing was at an all time high.
Washington Hall, which had burnt down in 1876 was now rebuilt and legislature voted a popular referendum to move the capital of the state to Charleston. The meetings and social events were constant. Businesses such as Mr. Thoner's were supplying the "best" houses with wines. The McClure Hotel was one of his customers.
