Guilford in South Central Region, Connecticut — The American Northeast (New England)
Ice House
Located here just behind the adjacent small barn was the farm ice house. Measuring 14 x 18 feet, it was used for the storage of ice harvested from the pond to the southeast. Cut from the shallow pond each winter, it would be stacked in the ice house where the sawdust insulated walls would preserve the ice well into summer. The 150 foot long earthen dam and sluice for the controlled yearly flooding of the ice pond is still in place. The reconstruction here replicates the original.
Also gone from this site is a mail wooden structure that was used for smoking meat.
