1. Revolutionary War Veteran Marker, Side One
Inscription. Lt. John Dusenberry died in Peoria County, Illinois, on September 26, 1833. He was buried in the 'Old French Cemetery' which became Block 35 when the Town of Peoria was formed in 1835.

Descended from mid-1600s immigrants from the Netherlands, John Dusenberry was born c. 1754. On February 26, 1776. while residing in Dutchess County. New York. he was appointed First Lieutenant of the 8th Company of the 3rd Regiment of the New York Forces of the Continental Army. His Commission was signed by John Hancock, President of the Congress of the United Colonies.

Lt. Dusenberry served under General Washington at the Battle of Long Island with Lord Sterling, retreat from New York, Battle of Harlem Heights, Battle of White Plains where he was wounded, Battle of Trenton after crossing the Delaware River, and Battle of Fort Independence. He continued service as a recruiter and guide due to being well acquainted with the ground.

His service concluded at Philadelphia as the officer commanding the guard of the ordinance taken from Cornwallis at Yorktown until it was distributed to the States.

in early 1784, receiving pension of $20 per month and letters patent to 500 acres in Seneca County, New York. Documentation may be found at the National Archives in the Revolutionary War Pension and Bounty Land Warrant Application Files. Roll: 0876 (S.45353).

Veteran Dusenberry came to Peoria in the early 1830s from Sterling, New York, either with or shortly after his only surviving child David Dusenberry and grandson Moses Yoeman Dusenberry. both of whom also died in Peoria, in 1846 and 1908, respectively. Among the few items in John Dusenberry's extremely modest estate at death was one book. entitled "The Life of Christ."

The Zeally Moss Chapter of the Sons of the American Revolution (SAR) funded this plaque as did the Illinois Society of the SAR and the George Washington Endowment Fund of the National Society of the SAR. Placed in commemoration with honor on National Flag Day, June 14, 2019.
