The Silver Lake branch of the Baltimore and Ohio railroad was 7.6 miles long and connected Perry with Silver Springs. The line was opened in 1871, had stops in the Silver Lake Institute and served the community for 102 years. Passenger service was discontinued on August 4, 1951, with the final run of B&O trains 67 and 68 in and out of Perry. Freight service continued for another 22 years and the line closed June 26, 1973 and abandoned soon after. The tracks ran lake side in what is now referred to as the green space in the Institute.
