Inscription.
Louis Joseph Maria Beel (1902-1977)

Minister of the Interior, he played a major role in the post-war purges. Beel was also Prime Minister of the first post-war cabinet. During this period, Minister Drees introduced the Emergency Old Age Pension Act, the forerunner of the AOW. Beel was a silent, decisive administrator, who decided to carry out a second police action during a visit to Indonesia. The cruelty against Indonesia later led to the stamp 'controversial' attached to his name. Louis Beel later became Prime Minister again, this time of a short-lived transitional cabinet. As Vice-President of the Council of State and Minister of State, he was an important advisor to Queen Juliana. As an informant, he resolved stalled cabinet formations on several occasions. All this earned him the nickname viceroy.
