Newburgh in Orange County, New York — The American Northeast (Mid-Atlantic)
Minuteman Statue
This statue was created by Henry Hudson Kitson in 1924. An almost identical statue, also designed by Kitson, stands in Lexington, Massachusetts. These two statues act as bookends to the war, monuments to where the war began and ended.
Though famous for their part in the Revolutionary War, the always-ready soldiers that would come to be called Minutemen existed before in the Colonies. Samuel Thompson, a militia commander from Massachusetts in the French and Indian War recorded that, when his regular troops were gone, he was sent eleven more at one minute's warning, with three days provision [Caption] Statue of Captain Parker, Lexington, Mass., 1913-1930, New York Public Library
