Brashears Stand
| | Ridgeland History Trail | |
Brashears Stand, once located nearby, was named for Robert Turner Brashears, who moved to this area in the late 1700s. Like other stands located along the Natchez Trace, Brashears offered travelers basic accommodations and provisions. In 1806, Brashears placed an advertisement in a Natchez newspaper describing his inn as "A house of Entertainment on the road leading from Natchez to Nashville." In addition to earning money from operating the inn, Brashears became wealthy as a trader of enslaved people.
During the War of 1812, Andrew Jackson camped at Brashears on his return trip to Tennessee following the battle of New Orleans. The King's Inn was later built on the site by John King who owned the property until it was purchased by Devander Culley in 1852. A native of New York, Culley established a large house and plantation known as Hawthorn Vale, which at one time included a racetrack where Kentucky horses were brought to rest and train on their way to the New Orleans tracks. Hawthorn Vale burned in 1896. Today, the Natchez Trace Parkway includes a tour stop near the site of Brashears Stand.
Devander Culley and his family were pioneer settlers of Madison County and they are buried in the Culley cemetery, which at the time was the northern-most portion of the Culley estate. Culley died in 1899, the year the Village of Ridgeland was chartered.
