This memorial pays honor to the citizens of the Ninth Ward who fought in World War I, with their names incised by hand into the granite. The goddess Victory is portrayed holding a shield to her breast and offering a palm branch, a symbol of victory and peace. Vittor, an Italian-born sculptor, was a prolific artist, creating dozens of statues, fountains, and memorials in Pittsburgh and its surrounding boroughs.
