Rockport in Knox County, Maine — The American Northeast (New England)
Samoset Resort
Standing here at the park named after Sis Reed, a native of the city and Rockland's unofficial flower lady, you are also on Jameson Point where Robert Jameson lived in a log cabin during the mid-1800's. A man with an unyielding disposition, he was once taken prisoner by a British captain who landed on the point with 19 men to take possession of Jameson's oxen, hogs, butter and guns. Jameson proceeded to make use of all the scornful epithets his tongue could command and was therefore quickly released. In 1889, a syndicate of Rockland businessmen opened the glorious Victorian styled Bay Point Hotel on the Point. In 1902, the fashionable resort was remodeled and renamed as the Samoset as shown in this photo. W.H. Glover, one of Maine's most prominent builders at the time, built the hotel as well as the Breakwater Light Keeper's house and many other of Rockland's finest buildings. The Samoset catered to wealthy summer people from Boston, New York, Philadelphia and Washington D.C. who enjoyed swimming, sailing, golf, horseback riding, dancing and fine dining.
