In the early days of Ridgeland, school was held in the town hall on West Jackson Street. There was one teacher for grades one through eight. In 1910, a new school was built south of the present site of the water tower in Old Town and was then moved to East School Street around 1914. A new elementary school was built further east in 1962 and is now known as Ann Smith Elementary.
Before 1968, white students attended the Madison-Ridgeland School in Madison and African American students attended the Madison Rosenwald School in the county, which later became Rosa Scott School. With a growing population, the need for schools in Ridgeland resulted in the construction of multiple new schools including Old Town Middle School (1996), Ridgeland High School (2002), and Highland Elementary (2004).
Also located in Ridgeland is St. Andrew's Episcopal School and Christ Covenant School. St. Andrew's was founded in Jackson in 1947. Their upper school campus has been located on Old Agency Road since 1985. Christ Covenant School is located on Pear Orchard Road and was established in 2002.
