What do we know about Hartog Wegloop? Veen says: ‘He was born in 1908, the son of Mozes Wegloop and Esther van Stratum. They had eight children, two of whom died as babies. Of the other six, only one daughter survived the war. All the others were murdered during the war.’(Submitted on October 28, 2024.)
Hartog’s life story is rather sad. His name can be found in the register of the Observation House for Boys. He was fourteen years old at the time and his profession is listed as Bicycle Boy. He then ended up at a State Disciplinary School.
When he was nineteen, he reported for military service, was approved and sent to the School for Anti-Aircraft Artillery. He was discharged from there after only a week due to physical disabilities. Veen: ‘Later, he appears in a police file. The inspector of the Market Office had arrested him because he was operating a barrel organ without a peddler’s permit. In short, he was a poor wretch who tried to make a living in all sorts of ways, like so many Jews from this neighbourhood at the time. He married the non-Jewish Alida Meijer in 1936. That marriage probably did not last, because when Hartog was arrested here in 1943, he lived alone. He was murdered in Auschwitz on 28 February 1943.’
