On Saturday 5 May 1945, the German capitulation was a fact, but the Canadian troops had not yet reached Amsterdam. Members of the Dutch Resistance Forces had taken up positions at various locations in the city to maintain order. Approximately 150 medical personnel were assembled in the De Leeuw building on Valkenburgerstraat. The company staff was located in the De Valk building, located on the same street. Around half past nine that evening, the Grόne Polizei (Ordnungspolizei, Nazi Police) marched into the street with fifty men and forced the door of De Leeuw. Most members of the BS (Binnenlandse Strijdkrachten, part of the union of resistance forces), almost all unarmed, fled to the top floor. One of them managed to warn the BS post on(Submitted on October 29, 2024.)the nearby Nieuwe Herengracht. The group of prisoners was herded outside and put against the wall with their hands up and searched. The command post on the Nieuwe Herengracht sent eighteen armed BS men to the De Leeuw building. A shooting ensued, in which four members of the BS were killed and five wounded. The four victims were Renee Pyck, Herman de Kok, Johannes van Reede and Flip B. Jernberg. On the German side, there were eight dead and twenty wounded. A number of members of the BS were captured by the Grόne Polizei. They were liberated on 6 May.Photographed by Andrew Ruppenstein, October 28, 20242.
