Inscription.
Ellsworth Falls Village served as the industrial heart of Ellsworth. Whitcomb, Haynes and Co. in 1913 was Ellsworth's largest business. They owned mill properties, wharves, timberlands, and interests in 13 vessels. Logs were sawn at Ellsworth Falls mills, and finished lumber was carried by teams down State Street to the wharves along Water Street. Two other mills produced barrel staves for the cement trade in Rondout on the Hudson River, making Ellsworth Falls the "barrel stave capital of Maine" in 1900.
The 3,600 square foot Ticonic 4 Engine House was constructed around 1888, to house steam-powered fire engines. The building was then used as a polling place, community center and thrift shop until its demolition in 2019.
