1. Oosterpoort / East Gate Marker
Aan het einde van de 18e eeuw waren de verdedigingswerken niet meer nodig en werd besloten die af te breken. In 1826 werd de Oosterpoort gesloopt.
The Oosterpoort (East Gate) was part of the fortifications of the city of Edam. It was the most decorative gate of the city and was one of the seven gates that Edam had. The gate passage was slightly curved to prevent firing straight through the gate into the street.
At the end of the 18th century the defences were no longer needed and it was decided to demolish them. In 1826 the Oosterpoort was demolished.

The marker is visible here on the left and is easy to miss, particularly when a bunch of road barriers has been dumped in front of it, as was the case here.
