Inscription.  German:

The Elector of the Palatinate lives in his paradise, Schwetzingen [...] as content as princes can be. German.

This is how the journalist, poet, and musician Christian Friedrich Daniel Schubart describes the pastimes of Carl Theodor (1724–1799) at his summer residence, where the court and thus a large part of the musicians stayed from May to October. The court orchestra was considered by contemporaries to be one of the best in Europe due to its quality, discipline, and excellent organization. The Mannheim sound, which not only filled the palace and gardens but also the market town of Schwetzingen, was characteristic. Typical opening phrases, contrasting dynamics, and crescendo effects characterized the compositions, which – perfected by outstanding soloists – were performed.

Schubart lists further essential elements of court music in Schwetzingen: chamber music, concerts (the so-called "academies"), and opera performances. The opera scene in Schwetzingen is particularly noteworthy. In contrast to the winter season in Mannheim, where, as was customary at the time, mainly Italian opera seria was performed, the summer season was distinguished by an unusual variety: Italian opere buffe, intermezzi, and pastorals, French opéras comiques, and German singspiele were all presented here.
