1. The Reading Room at the Bar Harbor Inn Marker
Inscription.
In 1874, a club was opened "...for the purpose of establishing and Maintaining a reading room at Bar Harbor, in the town of Eden, Hancock County, and for the promotion of literary and social culture among its members." Its membership, which peaked at 415 (including the deceased!), reads like Who's Who in America. Members included George Bucknam Dorr (father of Acadia National Park), Dr. Robert Abbe (Founder of the Abbe Museum), Rowland Macy (founder of Macy's), and Charles Eliot (President of Harvard University). Although prohibition had started in Maine in 1861, much of the members' reading was done through the bottom of a glass filled with spirits. The club also hosted high-ranking personalities. The curved Reading Room section of the building, erected in 1887, still stands today.
