Victory in Europe (VE) celebrations in Halifax and Dartmouth on 7-8 May 1945 sparked large-scale rioting, looting, and public drunkenness. Three naval seamen died in the chaos. News of the Allied victory was expected, but the festivities were poorly planned, and frustrations between civilians and the large number of military personnel had been building for years.
