Fred Shepard, like many islanders, went to the mainland to find work. Originally from Cardigan Head, he was working construction in Montreal around 1941 when tragedy struck. Fred was seriously injured in a workplace accident that broke his back and crushed his legs, forcing him to use a wooden leg for his life. Fred returned home to his wife, Harriett, and their six children and lived into his 79s.

Fred Shepard, comme beaucoup d'Insulaires, s'est rendu sur le continent pour trouver du travail. Originaire de Cardigan Head, il travaillait dans le secteur de la construction à Montréal vers 1941 lorsqu'une tragédie l'a frappé. Fred a été gravement blessé lors d'un accident de travail qui lui a brisé le dos et écrasé la jambe, l'obligeant à utiliser une jambe de bois à vie. Fred est rentré chez lui auprès de sa femme, Harriet, et de leurs six enfants et a vécu jusque dans la soixante-dizaine.
