Inscription.
The distinctive spelling of Robert Allen Shepheard’s surname on First World War recruitment papers adds to the number of spellings of this historic Black Islander name, passed down since David and Keisha Shepard arrived in the 1780s as enslaved servants to Loyalist settlers. Robert’s mother, Mary Ellen Byers, is herself a descendant from the other oldest Black Islander family, the Byers.
