1. Mass. Ave. and Chatham Arch Marker
Inscription. Development in the Chatham Arch section of Massachusetts Ave., between East Street and College Avenue, peaked in the 1870s and continued into the 1920s with increased industrialization exemplified by the Real Silk Hosiery Mills, which replaced many 19th century houses. The area saw decline from the 1930s to the 1970s.

The construction of the interstate system through downtown Indianapolis isolated the area from the neighborhoods to the north and east. Although more than 140 historic buildings had been demolished in Chatham Arch since 1968, urban pioneers began to come downtown to reclaim and restore some of the historic buildings in the 1980s. Chatham Arch was listed in the National Register of Historic Places as a historic district in 1980 and designated as a historic area by the City of Indianapolis in 1982. The district was named one of Indianapolis' Cultural District in 2003.
