Inscription.
A rail line to Ellsworth was completed in 1884 for the Shore Line Railroad passenger trains. Soon, the line was extended to McNeil Point in Hancock, where train passengers boarded a ferry for the short trip to Bar Harbor. The rail line was later extended to Washington County for both passenger and freight service. When Maine Central took over rail service, a new Ellsworth depot was built in 1928, replacing the 1912 Victorian-style station. Freight service through Ellsworth ended in 1984.
Larry Pelletier, Sr. started his bakery business in a small building in 1955. A new building was erected in 1968 on the same Main Street lot. Those who grew up in Ellsworth fondly remember purchasing wonderful baked goods at the family-owned bakery. Sadly, Larry's Pastry Shop closed in 2006.
