Samuel Kidder Ehiting (1817-1882) was an investor in sailing vessels and a member of a large mercantile family with branches in Castine and Ellsworth. In 1822, Jarvis Whiting (Samuel's father) built a tavern on the site of the current S.K. Whiting Park serving travelers. The tavern was later used as a home and moved to the neighboring lot.
The corner lot became the site of the Unitarian Church that was designed by S.S. Woodcock Architects of Boston and built by I. & O.W. Kent. The Church was dedicated on August 28, 1867. In September 1875, the Unitarian Social and Benevolent Society raised the funds to add a vestry to the Church. The Church fell into disrepair and was torn down in 1971.

En 1822, Jarvis Whiting (son père) fit construire une taverne sur le site actuel du parc Whiting pour servir les voyageurs. La taverne devint ensuite une maison privée qui fut transportée sur le terrain voisin. Sur la parcelle du coin de rue, l'Église Unitarienne fut construite par I. & O.W. Kent selon les plans de S.S.
