Ellsworth became Hancock County's seat of government in 1838, housed in what is now the Courthouse Gallery. The various wars (Revolutionary, Civil, Great) had their impact on Maine's male population, and in 1933 the Great Fire destroyed much of Ellsworth's downtown-this just ten years after the Great Flood. New buildings were built of brick or in Art Deco style (The Grand Theatre). Ellsworth's city hall dates from this pre-World War II era.
