Farmhouse

Farmhouse. . , The Dudley Form House was built in 1844 by Erastus Dudley. It was for Ruth, himself, and his son Nathan who was soon to wed Sophonia., Its Greek Revival style was in keeping with many built during the 1840's. On the interior however, was a fairly traditional and conservative plan for the day, sharing much from houses a hundred years older. There was one room to the left and right of the chimney with a keeping room along the rear. In that keeping room was a large cooking fireplace., Change began to take place to the house around 1880 with the addition of a Victorian parlor and side porch. Changes to the kitchen and dining room also took place at this time., Real modernization came shortly after 1900 when an addition to the north was added for the older Nathan and Sophonia. At this time the large center chimney was removed and replaced with a smaller brick chimney that would serve the parlor stoves and the new kitchen iron range. Further changes took place north of the kitchen to link the new north addition., A shed behind the house served as a place to store firewood and do laundry. Beneath the shed is a large cistern for water collected from the roofs., Nathan and Sophia raised five children in the house. The house passed to their only son Erastus who married Martha Munger. With their two children Mable and Nathan there continued to be three generations living in the house.
