Pub Politics
Imagine your political leaders passing laws in the local pub. Until the first public building was erected in Queen Square in 1812, this was exactly where the Island's legislature met to discuss important issues of the day. Cross Keys Tavern, once here, was the setting for one of their earliest colonial meetings. the legislature frequented this establishment so often that the tavern's proprietor was appointed their clerk - pouring rum with one hand and taking meeting notes with the other!
