The Briars

The Briars. Bar Harbor, Maine. , This is the south entrance to the Shorepath as is explained on the green sign at the head of the path. The Briars Cottage was built in 1881 by the founder of Sears, J. Montgomery Sears of Boston. John D. Rockefeller Jr. rented the cottage for the summer of 1908 and his third child, Nelson, was born there on July 8. In 1910, Edward (Ned) McLean bought the Briars and married Evelyn Walsh, who loved jewelry and eventually became the proud owner of the 45.52 carat Hope diamond in 1911. After her death in 1947, the diamond was sold to a New York City jeweler to help pay off debts against her estate.
