Inscription.
Mary Shannon of Newton, Massachusetts summered in Bar Harbor for 30 years from 1871 until her death in 1901. Ms. Shannon donated a sizeable portion of her land to the Village Improvement Association for the children of Bar Harbor. To this day the wading pool and woods on Spring Street are still known as Glen Mary. Her "cottage", Ledge Lawn, was torn down in 1902 and replaced with the building you see here which was built by S. W Bridgham and family. Their daughter was to have been married in the home in the summer of 1910 and, as the story goes, the groom skipped town just days before and left the bride so distraught she took her own life. The cottage was turned into an inn around the mid-1970s.
