1. The Sparta House Marker

Inscription. David Mills erected this finely built hotel in the American Colonial style: it had double verandas and classical proportions with a large ballroom on the second floor. It features dentils under the eaves, eave returns, a boomtown, pilastered doorway and clapboard siding. The building has seen many uses including a hardware store, a furniture shop, a funeral parlour, and a barbershop. A long term owner was Louis Moedinger and family. Currently, it has been remodelled to serve as a tearoom. Directly to the north of this building lie the remains of the original Sparta dam and mill. The latter was a highly prized building in any pioneer settlement. (Marker Number 20.)
