1. Israel Doan House Marker

Inscription.
The Doan family were the first settlers in the Corners (later named Sparta). Jonathan Doan came in 1813 from the Niagara Region and settled just west of the current village. His son Josfa took part in the 1837 Rebellion and fled to the United States. He took part in the attack on Windsor in 1838, where he was captured. He was tried, found guilty and hanged for treason in London. Joshua's brother, Israel built several of the homes in Sparta and finally settled in this house. He also worked as a broom maker. The shop next door was the Strachan tinsmith shop in the early days and later the Butterwick/Fishleigh butcher shop with the ice house on the back for preserving the meat. (Marker Number 13.)
