Baptist Parsonage

Baptist Parsonage. A modest example of Greek Revival architecture and suited to the plain tastes of a Quaker-influenced community, this house was built in 1855. It is characterized by a symmetrical facade, and a centre doorway with pilasters and a dentiled cornice. The twelve pane, double hung windows are typical of the mid-nineteenth century. Moulded eave returns grace the end gables, and the shingled roof supports two symmetrical brick chimneys. Interior details include original main floor window and door mouldings, stair rail, spindles and newel post, and the pine plank floors of the upper level. #'s 8 and 25 are similar in design and detail., The house was purchased by the Sparta Baptist congregation in 1886 and served as the parsonage until 1959. It was professionally restored in 1985. In 1901 temperance advocates, led by the Baptist parson and other local figures, purchased the Ontario House (# 19), Sparta's busiest hotel, and closed its bar. On its last night serving liquor, an angry crowd marched here to vent their displeasure. When they were met at the front door by a prominent citizen holding a shotgun, the crown dispersed.
