1. The Temperance House Marker
This hotel seemed to have the better business than the other hotels in town. They became centres for much nineteenth century revelling, especially holiday celebrations.
The bar of the Elgin House was closed however in 1901 by an enthusiastic group of Temperance supporters who took it over and hence its name. The new Temperance House was equipped with a drawing room with newspaper and periodicals and would become not only a home for travellers but also a social and educational centre for the Sparta area.
