1. Swan's Tavern Marker
Swan's Tavern, formerly known as the Washington Hotel was built ca. 1807 by the Boston and Taunton Stage Company in conjunction with the construction of the Taunton and South Boston Turnpike. It was presided over by its landlord, Capt. Elisha Swan, who later purchased it, re-naming it Elisha Swan's Hotel-Tavern. A railroad line from the Old Colony Railroad passed under both Turnpike and Central Streets at this location. Over the years it has served as a farmhouse for the Caddell family with 63 accompanying acres, an office for an advertising business, a restaurant, a Hebrew School, and a church.
When the railroad was built in 1865, it passed underneath both Central and Turnpike Streets near this location. The large Samuel Capen House, which shows the presence of the railroad cut, was moved to Randolph. The railroad bed is still visible, directly across Central Street.
