Inscription. Erected in 1789 on land given by John Cram, this building was the first church in Pittsfield. Between 1800-1818 Rev. Benjamin Sargent preached to both Congregationalists and Baptists from the same pulpit. The building was turned over to the town in 1841 for offices and school rooms. The original two-story building was radically altered in 1881 when the Mansard roof was added and in 1910 when the bell tower was erected. During much of the 20th century it contained a courthouse, a police station and a jail. Gutted by fire in 1984, it was rebuilt as a community center in 1989.

Erected 1999 by Pittsfield Historical Society. (Marker Number 8.)
