Inscription.

Aveluy, a peaceful town in the Ancre valley, was completely ravaged during the First World War during the various offensives. The town was awarded the Croix de Guerre on 27 October 1920 for the damage it had suffered.

Often mentioned in French, British or German works, the village of Aveluy was close to the front and was for the Allied front troops (the French from September 1914 to July 1915 and then the Commonwealth troops from July 1915 to March 1917), a village in the rear with its supply posts and its evacuation posts for the wounded, as evidenced by the cemetery in the centre of the village. 613 soldiers rest there forever.

To mark the centenary, the municipality has decided to create a monument featuring an ephemeral work sculpted by French soldiers during their presence in the municipality. It is the famous "Nymph of Aveluy" immortalized in photos and duplicated in postcards sent by the soldiers to their families. These works were generally performed during a time of respite between two assaults. It was a need to leave a trace of their presence. There are often references to femininity (portraits or bodies of naked or clothed women), patriotic scenes (soldiers or regimental insignia, roosters, portraits of Marianne or Joan of Arc), animals (dogs, horses or rats) or landscapes.

For Aveluy's work, it is not only graffiti but a complete fresco, a trace of an intense emotional moment, created by anonymous soldiers, artists for a day.

Monument created by Olivier Briquet, artist of Bus les Artois and co-financed by the Departmental Council, the Community of Communes of the Poppy Country and the Municipality of Aveluy.
