Echu à François d'Hallwyll, colonel du régiment de la Garde suisse, un premier hôtel avait été loué à Necker, banquier suisse, futur controleur général des finances de Louis XVI. Sa fille Germaine, devenue plus tard baronne de Staël, y naquit en 1766. La même année, Claude-Nicolas Ledoux édifie l'hôtel actuel, déjà de style Louis XVL La façade sur rue est inspirée de l'antique. Sur cour, le corps de logis est beaucoup plus simple, mais il présentait sur le jardin une colonnade dorique, aujourd'hui dénaturée, Le décor intérieur a été dispersé : seul l'escalier demeure. Des hôtels construits à Paris par Claude-Nicolas Ledoux, l'hôtel d'Hallwyll est le seul à n'avoir pas été détruit.

(English translation:)
The first mansion, which fell to François d'Hallwyll, colonel of the Swiss Guard regiment, had been rented to Necker, a Swiss banker and future controller general of finances for Louis XVI. inspired by antiquity. On the courtyard, the main building is now much simpler, but it formerly had a Doric colonnade on the garden, which is now gone. The interior decor has been dispersed: only the staircase remains. Of the mansions built in Paris by Claude-Nicolas Ledoux, the Hôtel d'Hallwyll is the only one not to have been destroyed.
