The Carnes family moved to the area as one of the earliest settlers, and their original 1820s cabin remains. Many of the original furnishings are displayed at the Douglas County Museum of History and Art.

3. A later wood framed house in the Clinton Nature Preserve.
This is a wood-framed house built by one of John Thomas Carnes daughters and her husband in the mid-nineteenth century, and is also in the Preserve. Both structures are part of the National Register-listed Carnes-Clinton Farm Historic District. The 200-acre park was donated to Douglas County by Ms. Annie Mae Clinton (18961983), a great-granddaughter of John Thomas Carnes, with her will stipulating that the park would remain primarily in its natural state.
