St. Michael's Catholic Church was founded in Chicago's Old Town neighborhood in 1850. This building was completed around 1869, and its stone walls survived the Great Chicago Fire of 1871, unlike much of the surrounding community of wooden buildings. St. Michael's was the tallest building in Chicago until the original Board of Trade Building was completed in 1885.
