Pieter Jacobus Oud (1886-1968)

(English translation:)
At the age of thirty, the minimum age for membership at the time, Piet Oud entered the Lower House on behalf of the Vrijzinnig-Democratische Bond. He became involved in important events during his political career. As Minister of Finance during the crisis years, his austerity policy made him unpopular with the social democrats. As mayor of Rotterdam, he experienced the bombing of 1940. Oud had to give up this office a year later, but resumed it immediately after the war. He was also the founder of both the PvdA and, after switching, of the VVD, of which he was party leader and parliamentary group chairman for fifteen years. Opponents found him stubborn, but he was admired for his tireless dedication, iron memory and enormous knowledge. He received various awards and was appointed Minister of State.
