Port Perry in Durham Region, Ontario — Central Canada (North America)
Canadian Bank of Commerce
The parcel of land on which this building stands was for many years the location of a hotel. By the mid-1870s the Walker House Hotel was the tallest commercial building in town and had a reputation as a quality hotel.
After being destroyed by fire in 1883, the site was left empty until 1899 when The Canadian Bank of Commerce purchased the property and constructed the present building, leaving the western half of the lot as an open space and driveway.
During the time that the Bank of Commerce occupied this site, it was robbed numerous times, once in 1945 by the infamous Boyd Gang.
James Porter was manager of the bank from 1959 to 1966. Porter was succeeded by Don McRitchie who managed the bank until his retirement in 1975. He was succeeded by Gary P. David.
During this period, the Imperial Bank of Canada and the Canadian Bank of Commerce merged to form the Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce. In October 1980, the CIBC moved to new facilities just east of this former location. The building was next acquired by the Standard Trust Company, which collapsed in 1991 and re-opened as the Laurentian Bank with Will Davidson as manager.
Susan Clearwater purchased the building in January 2003, after Laurentian closed and TD Canada Trust opened in November that year.
