The building was added to the NRHP in 1980. The building was the largest apartment complex in Chicago when it was built, and is considered one of the finest examples of the courtyard style of apartment complex, which was popular in the city and its older inner suburbs during the first decades of the 20th century.

1. Courtyard buildings a piece of history. A 1987 Chicago Tribune article looks at the Pattington and its place in Chicago's history of courtyard apartments.
Excerpt: "Although the Pattington`s architect, David Postle, remains relatively unknown, the Pattington, built in 1902, is considered by local architects to be the best example of a style that flourished from the turn of the century to the late 1920s when apartment living in the city was beginning to acquire respectability and a wave of building was underway."
