Inscription.  German:

Baptist came from Beratzhausen, and mother Anna from Erbendorf. In addition to his work as a teacher, Johann Baptist also held the roles of sexton, choir director, parish clerk, and church organist.

As he was allowed to accompany his father and occasionally take over his duties, the young Hans was introduced to music at an early age. By observing his father’s organ playing, he learned to play himself, to the point where even the pastor from Waldeck attested that Hans played better than his father. However, violin lessons under his father’s guidance were less successful.

After a brief introduction to the instrument, his father wanted to move on to duets. Although he was aware of his son’s musical talent, he was so disappointed by this that he punished him harshly.

As a result, mother Anna forbade further violin lessons. However, Hans continued to enjoy playing and secretly continued his studies on the instrument, eventually being able to play the second violin part in dance pieces.

He also taught himself how to play the piano. A spinet from the attic was taken to a carpenter by his father after much pleading, and Hans practiced diligently on it and learned quickly.

He also composed a complete mass at a young age. Through his maternal lineage, Hans Koessler was related to Max Reger, who was born in Brand; they were second cousins.

Although they met only rarely, they maintained a friendly connection. Koessler's support became particularly important for Reger toward the end of the 1890s.
