1. Humphrey Residence Marker
Inscription.
Willie James Humphrey (1900-1994) was a clarinetist and music teacher, lived here at 2315 Cadiz Street from 1954 to 1994. In Chicago he played with Freddie Keppard, George Filhe, and Joe “King” Oliver, and in New Orleans, with Amos Riley, Frankie Dusen, Zutty Singleton, and Kid Rena. In St. Louis he recorded and played with Dewey Jackson, and played the Streckfus Riverboats with Fate Marable. He was with Lucky Millinder & the Mills Blue Rhythm Band, Henry “Red” Allen, the U.S. Naval Band in World War II, Steve Lewis, Louis Dumaine, Paul Barbarin, and The Eureka Brass Band. He was a regular at Preservation Hall in his own groups and “Sweet” Emma Band, Percy Humphrey’s Crescent City Joymakers, and Billie and Dede Pierce’s Band.
