1. Carrere Residence Marker
Inscription.
George J. Carrere (1889-1962), violinist, orchestra leader, and music teacher, lived here at 4611 Chestnut St. from 1917 to 1962. A graduate of Straight University, he taught at New Orleans University and gave private lessons. As a concert violinist he toured the U.S. accompanied by pianist-composer Camille Nickerson. His brother, clarinetist-saxophonist Sidney “Goody” Carrere (1900-1953), who lived here from 1917 to 1953, played and recorded with Papa Celestin’s Original Creole Jazz Orch., and played with Kid Ory. Their nephew drummer Edwin “Beans” Bergeron (1909-1971) lived here from 1917 to 1964, and played with Papa Celestin, Kid Ory, Sidney Bechet, Louis Armstrong, Barney Bigard, King Oliver, and marched with Fats Houston.
