Absalom Jones School
In 1867 on land rented and later purchased by the Trustees of the First United African Wesleyan Society, the first school was built with the help of the Freedmen's Bureau. In 1923, with funding provided by the Delaware School Auxiliary Association, a new two-story schoolhouse was built at this location and named Newport Colored School 106-C to teach grades 1-9. In the 1930s, the name was changed to honor Absalom Jones and in 1963, shortly after the Brown v Board of Education decision, the school was integrated. With desegregation of schools and declining enrollment, Absalom Jones School closed. It now serves as a community center for New Castle County.
