Inscription. This large pot is a ladle from the Tennessee Copper Company smelter at Copperhill. The copper ore was smelted in large furnaces by heating it to temperatures just under 2000 degrees Fahrenheit. The molten copper was then separated from the other elements present in the raw ore and was poured into ladles like this one. By means of an overhead crane, the molten copper was ladled into a mold that, when cooled, produced a large slab of market-ready copper.
